A standard car battery is currently worth somewhere between $10 and $25 in Australia, depending on where you sell it, its size, and its condition. Scrap battery buyers typically pay $0.50 to $1.00 per kilogram, though some report rates as low as $0.10 to $0.50 per kilogram, so it genuinely pays to check more than one buyer before you settle for the first number offered. That range isn't a sign the market is unpredictable, it reflects real differences in what buyers can do with the material once they have it, and how far it has to travel before it reaches a processor.

Why the Value Is Almost Entirely in the Lead

A car battery isn't valuable because it's a battery, it's valuable because roughly 60 to 70% of its total weight is lead or lead alloy. Strip away the plastic casing and the acid, and what's left is a dense, easily-remelted metal with a real, liquid commodity market behind it. Scrap lead prices track the London Metal Exchange lead price, and 2026 has seen firm demand driven by ongoing battery manufacturing and infrastructure build-out, which is part of why current rates are holding up rather than sliding.

This is worth sitting with for a second, because it changes how you should think about a "battery" as scrap. You're not really selling a battery. You're selling roughly ten kilograms of lead wrapped in some plastic and acid that a processor has to deal with before they can get to the part they actually want.

Not All Car Batteries Are the Same

Most car batteries on the road are still flooded lead-acid, the traditional wet-cell design with liquid electrolyte. But a growing share of newer vehicles, particularly anything with stop-start technology, use AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries instead. The two aren't identical from a scrap perspective.

A 100Ah AGM battery is typically 10 to 15% lighter than a flooded battery of the same capacity, since AGM designs use less electrolyte. AGMs also deliver stronger, more consistent cold cranking amps thanks to lower internal resistance, which is why they've become standard in vehicles that demand a lot from the starter battery, larger diesels, 4WDs, and anything with automatic engine stop-start. They last longer too, typically 5 to 8 years and sometimes a full decade, against 3 to 5 years for a standard flooded battery.

None of that changes the basic economics much, both chemistries are still lead-acid at their core, and the scrap value still comes down to lead content. But it does mean an AGM battery pulled from a newer 4WD won't necessarily weigh, or be worth, the same as a flooded battery of a similar physical size. If you're not sure which type you're holding, the battery casing usually says so, and it's worth checking before you assume a price based on size alone.

What Actually Moves the Price

  • Condition. Intact, non-leaking batteries get the best rate. Cracked, corroded, or leaking units are usually discounted because they cost the buyer more to handle safely, and in some cases they may not be accepted at all outside a licensed hazardous-materials process.
  • Size. A small passenger car battery typically weighs somewhere around 10 to 15kg. A battery out of a 4WD, ute, or light truck can run 20kg or more. More lead means more money, even at an identical per-kilogram rate.
  • Volume. Bringing in several batteries at once, whether you're a household clearing out a shed or a small workshop doing routine turnover, typically gets a better per-kilogram rate than a single unit walked in on its own.
  • Where you sell. Rates genuinely vary between buyers in the same city, let alone between states, so a quick comparison is worth the five minutes it takes rather than accepting the first number you're offered.

The Legal Side Most People Don't Know About

Here's something that catches a lot of first-time sellers off guard: in several Australian states, it is illegal for a scrap metal dealer to pay you in cash for a car battery, or for scrap metal generally. Victoria introduced a law in 2018 banning cash payments for scrap metal transactions outright, everything has to go through electronic funds transfer or cheque. New South Wales' Scrap Metal Industry Act 2016 imposes the same requirement. Western Australia has an equivalent rule requiring bank transfer or another non-cash payment method.

Alongside that, registered dealers are required to sight and record photo ID at the point of sale, and to keep a record of the transaction, your details, a description of the material, and how payment was made. This isn't red tape for its own sake. It exists because scrap metal, batteries very much included, has historically been an easy way to launder stolen goods, and a traceable payment trail combined with ID records makes that a lot harder to pull off. If a buyer offers you cash with no paperwork and no ID check, that's not a favour, it's a red flag, and in most states it's the buyer breaking the law, not you.

The Regulatory Picture Most People Get Wrong

Australia recycles around 99% of its lead-acid batteries, and modern processing recovers about 97% of a battery's total weight, so this isn't a niche or difficult material to deal with responsibly. But here's the part that surprises people: B-cycle, Australia's national battery stewardship scheme authorised by the ACCC, covers household batteries under 5kg, alkaline, zinc-carbon, nickel-metal hydride, small sealed lead-acid, but it explicitly does not cover automotive lead-acid batteries. If you've been assuming your car battery falls under the same scheme as your old AA batteries, it doesn't, it goes through a separate commercial recycling channel instead, which is exactly where its scrap value comes into play.

The regulatory environment is also tightening more broadly. Western Australia has been consulting on banning batteries and e-waste from landfill altogether, and in March 2025, New South Wales passed the Product Lifecycle Responsibility Act, the first law of its kind in Australia, requiring battery suppliers to take responsibility across the full product lifecycle, not just at end of life. The direction of travel across the country is toward more structured, accountable battery recycling, not less.

The Environmental Case for Recycling Lead Specifically

Beyond the dollars, recycling lead genuinely matters environmentally, and the numbers back that up independently of anyone's sales pitch. Recycling lead cuts energy use by around 60% compared with producing the same amount from virgin ore, mining, crushing, and smelting lead ore is a genuinely energy-intensive process that recycling simply skips. Recycled lead already supplies about half of global lead demand, meaning this isn't a fringe activity, it's already a mainstream part of how the world gets its lead. And specifically for car batteries, an estimated 80% of the lead in a brand-new battery comes from recycled material, so selling your old battery for scrap isn't just clearing space, it's a direct input into the next battery someone else buys.

What Happens After You Sell It

At a proper reprocessing facility, batteries are fed into crushers that separate them into four streams: lead metal, lead paste, polypropylene casing, and sulphuric acid. The lead fractions get smelted into ingots and go straight back into new batteries and other lead products. The acid is neutralised and converted into sodium sulfate, which ends up in fertilisers and laundry detergent. The plastic casing is chipped and pelletised into new battery housings. Almost nothing about a properly recycled car battery goes to waste, which is a large part of why the recovery rate sits as high as it does.

A Few Practical Tips

If you're actually going to sell one, a few things make the process smoother and safer. Keep the battery upright during transport, tipping it risks leaking acid. Don't store it somewhere it can get knocked or crushed, a cracked case turns an easy sale into a hazardous-handling problem and a lower price. Don't just toss it in with a general scrap metal load, batteries need to be identified and handled separately by law in most states, and mixing them in can complicate an otherwise straightforward transaction. And bring photo ID, you'll need it regardless of which state you're in.
